RULES

Rules

1. Video Game Awards Only - The Video Game includes Console games,
PC games, Handheld games, and Indie games, but not Mac games, Kids games, Free games, etc.

a. A game must be an original title but includes an expansion pack.

b. A remade version of the game is included from 2019 onwards.


2. Professional Awards Only - The Media include Sites, Magazines, Newspapers, Publications, Broadcastings, but not Blogs have a staff of one.

a. Journalists that belong to the Media must be professional.

b. A website must have it's own domain name.

c. A personal site like the one-man blog is not included.

d. A user community site that consists of bulletin boards alone, is not included.

e. Exceptions to clause 'd' are as follows;

* NeoGAF - a video game industry discussion community.

* GameFAQs - a site that helps people either defeat a game, become more skilled at it, or provides information about it.

f. A forum poll shall be regarded as GOTY Awards provided the results are officially announced on behalf of the media. But in principle at least, that is not included.

g. A student-operated newspaper is not included.


3. All-Format GOTY Awards Only - But a single GOTY pick must be a single title, except for a tie.

a. A tie is the result in competitions where there is either no winner or multiple winners, so it means multiple titles selected by agreement of all editors in the media.

b. Awards include rankings of games like best games of the year.

4. Additional standards for judgment about the websites. (added)

a. If only one of these below is applicable, they will be excluded.

* The small number of reviews in a calendar year as a measure of video gaming 

websites.

* The small number of game articles in a calendar year as a measure of all other 

websites.

* The launch date for the website. This is for excluding short-term websites.

* The low activity of the community. This is for excluding some readers' polls that

have a very low voter turnout.

b. Websites that have their own traditional media (such as newspapers, print

magazines, TV channels, etc.) are included without qualification.

The Top 100 Selling Games of the Last 12 Months - Next Generation

* Numbers are based on official records from NPD and information provided to Next-Gen by publishers. Publicly available data and analysis was also taken into account, as well as dead reckoning and sanity checking from the Next-Gen staff when exact counts (such as unified sales data for Europe) were difficult to corroborate, conflicting, or unavailable.

* Numbers take into account only titles released and sold between March 1, 2007 and March 1, 2008. Each game only had to be released in one western territory to be included.

* Numbers take into account North America and Western Europe only.

* Numbers represent retail sales only.

*Pack-in titles were not counted.

* Older games re-released in the last year were only included if they included significant changes beyond a lower price. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition is an example of the former (thanks to its new control scheme). Hitman Trilogy, a collection of three Hitman games with no content changes, would be an example of the latter.

The 100 best selling games in North America last year - Next Generation


1. The stats were compiled using NPD stats as well as various public, analyst and publisher figures and dead reckoning.

2. Reviews were compiled via Metacritic and Gamerankings using the average rating for highest selling platform.

3. Reviews snippets are chosen for representing general view and corresponding with average score. No value is attached to the review chosen. Thanks to those journos and outlets whose snippets we have used.

4. Genres are very broadly defined for analysis purposes.

5. Games or platform versions of games released prior to January 1st 2006 are not included. Expansion packs, remixes and reissues not included. Games released after January 1st 2007 are not included.

6. We have not been able to gain reliable stats on downloaded games. These sales are not included. Games not available at retail are not included. Mobile phone games are not included.

7. Do bear in mind that games released late in the year likely to sell more copies in the months ahead, while those released a year ago are probably just about done. There is nothing ‘final’ about this list.
